Day 312—Wednesday, November 17th, 2010
Biddy Early's
It’s been a while since I turned the reins over to my co-pilot and 365 commentor Al Rizo, who lives in Miami, but always finds a great bar for me to visit here in New York. Biddy Early’s is a bar that Al picked and it looks to be a classic Irish pub in the Financial District. Plus I just found out via email that both the BBC and ABC (see photos below), went there last week and they highly recommend it as well. Even though Clacky got thrown out of their kitchen.
Biddy Early was a tradtional Irish healer and if you want to read about her, you can do it here: Biddy Early. Personally I’m more interested in a beer than history, so I’ll read about Biddy later and check out the Biddy bar right now.
Here we are at Biddy Early's in the heart of the Financial District.
It's nice, dark and woody inside. (Subtle plug for Woody Radio!)
And hospitable bartender, Keith serves up a perfect pint of Guinness, which leads to...
The traditional wearin' of the Guinness.
Some of the many draft beers available at the bar.
Biddy Early was a healer back in the day and now she's hawking t-shirts. Welcome to 2010.
Here's a group of guys seated next to me at the bar. From left: Bryan, Rob, Nick, Ray and Yours Fooly.
And they were kind enough to buy shots for us. Cheers!
Here's Bryan with his friend Gerard.
Irish sport jerseys line the wall opposite the bar.
An instructional vintage Guinness sign on the wall.
Here's the kitchen that Clacky got thrown out of.
There's a large dining area in the back.
Meanwhile back at the bar, Keith is busy filling drink requests.
Time has worn on and my neighbors at the bar have left leaving empty drinks and a tip for Keith.
Caitlin and Shawn were enjoying drinks at the end of the bar.
Shawn Washburn is an artist and part of an art installation called, Visual Vaudeville. Check it out here: Visual Vaudeville. I'll be going soon and you can see a full report of it in the future here.
A look out the window and it's time to hit the road.
Cheers and goodnight, everybody!

Imagine an Irish garage sale and you have the interior decorating scheme of Biddy Early’s. Irish road signs, miniature trolleys, vintage Guinness beer signs and Irish sports jerseys hang from the walls and the ceilings in this dark, wooden bar. The front area is a long narrow space complete with a dark wooden bar and friendly bartenders behind it just waiting to pour you that perfect pint of Guinness. There’s a dining room in the back with plenty of tables and chairs to sit and enjoy drinks and food.
Biddy’s has a huge selection of beers to choose from. Here’s just some of the selections to be had on tap: Old Speckled Hen (you reading this, Gene?), Guinness, Smithwick's and their own Biddy's Brew. The bottled beer selection includes: Hoegaarden, Red Stripe, Rolling Rock and Brooklyn Lager. Oh, and they also have Miller Lite (are you reading this, Biff?)
If you’re in the mood for a top of the mornin’ snack or dinner, Biddy Early’s kitchen is open till 2am, seven days of the week. The menu is large and includes such standard tavern fare as wings, calamari, sliders and potato skins. Some of the tradional Irish dishes include: Bangers and Mash, Dublin Style Fish ‘n’ Chips, Homemade Irish Stew and a Traditional Irish Breakfast featuring, sausage, black & white pudding, irish bacon, eggs your style and baked beans.
Biddy Early was a legendary Irish healer, who I wish was around today. Maybe she could get rid of this fucking hangover before I have to go to work!

Great Choice, Al!
Bonus Photos by Gene of the BBC!
If you follow the 365 blog reguarly, you’ll know I had visitors in last week. There was meeting of the bar crawlers as the infamous, BBC (Baltimore Bar Crawlers featuring, Gene, Smoopy and Terry) met the new kids on the tavern-hopping block, the ABC (featuring Clacky and Shannon.) Gene was snapping pictures the whole time and he sent me some photos from the trip and here they are! And once again thanks to all five of you for hanging out with me on the bar crawl, a wonderful time was had by all. Okay, take it away Gene!
The BBC meets the ABC. From left: Terry, Clacky, Shannon and Smoopy.
Terry gets horny.

Shannon and Clacky show off Ninja dance moves and flippage.
Well-worked elbows!
Goodnight, everybody! (Here's a link to a slideshow Gene put together of their trip: The BBC Invade NYC again!)

Biddy Early's looks like a great place to stop off for an Irish Coffee, in my opinion, one of Ireland's greatest contributions to mankind...especially when the weather starts to turn cold!
@ Fitzy; by the way, on the Public Broadcasting Station the other day, I saw footage of a worker at a Koala Care facility pleasuring a Koala bear in order to obtain a quantity of Koala sperm for use in artificial insemination on a female Koala. After I wiped the tears from my eyes and got up off the floor, I began to wonder... is this part of your job description? Is it on your resume?
Great post! Always love the wearin of the Guinness and a great suggestion from Al again. That vaudeville art show looks cool, can't wait to see you visit it. And love the pictures of the BBC and ABC, nice slide show too, Gene, good travelogue of your visit and bar crawl with Marty!
Wow. Biddy Early's seems like a VERY very cool place, And OMG Marty, I just noticed your on day 312! Holy crap.
@Meleah: 53 to go, less than two months. The year has flown by in a sea of suds!
I love the BBC and the ABC!! Yay and cheers to you all. You look like such fun and wonderful people, wish that I could join the party.
Cheers and everyone and Cheers marty.
What a cool looking place that is!
I love the "Irish Garage Sale" feel!
Great shots of the Crawl Crew too.
Thanks to all who commented on "Crawlapalooza" yesterday.
It makes doing the designs worthwhile.
(sorry I didn't comment yesterday... life events got in the way)
Having a hell of a time commenting today.
Server "busy" a lot.
@"Boris" and everybody: The hosting site is really wonky today, I had real troubles putting this post up and comments are taking forever to post, hopefully they'll clear things up, thanks for your patience and comments! An cheers back at you Tiki Bar Susie!
ABC meets the BBC!!! god help us all!!!!....& god i wish i was there!!! good onya guys!!!...& for fuks sake clacky, STAY OUT OF THE KITCHEN!!!
@Jaws, naa mate i dont wank koalas for a living thanks mate, shit Barry would'nt want to leave home if that was the case....good q/s though...we are waiting approval for our exhibitors license which will incorporate a breeders license, so when i get to work this morning i will be putting it to my boss that "pleasuring" the koala will be strickened from my job description.....funny did you know the females have 2 uterus' & the males have a split end penis!!?? the horny little fellas definately get more bang for their buck...& on mon just gone my boss called me into a post mortem she was doing on a dog attack victim & it was a hermaphrodite, had a penis, vigina, teets, male scent gland, female pouch...only the 2nd one she has seen in 20 years of working with koalas..
@Fitzy: All that was missing was you, maybe next year, huh mate?
Biddy's is one of my new favorite spots! I recommend it to all! I actually had a Magners here,
for some reason I wasn't hungry for an Old Speckled Hen :( but ... I dix find 3 more bars in
the city that have it on draft! That's 4 now!
Kilkenny's ... that's my new conquest to find in the city ... I know of one bar on Earth that has it ... and it's in Baltimore !!!
Nonetheless ... everyone go to Biddy's ... then check out Lilly O'Briens the next block over and say hi to the Wil Ferrel look-a-like ! PARTY !!!
Behind the bartender a sign "Beer is not a matter of life or death, its much more important than that" how cool is that quote. Thanks Marty for making this a really good stop for all of us to enjoy with you. They should of let Tim Clack stay in the kitchen and cook up some Matilda's surprise or a Kangaroo burger (a burger with a fried egg on top).
@Al and GENE: Thank you Al for recommending it and thanks to Gene, the BBC and the ABC for giving it a pre-365 tryout. Also thanks for sending along the photos, Gene!
P.S. If anyone is trying to email me and I don't answer, it's because Earthlink isn't working right now. Hopefully the emails will make it to me once they fix the problem.
I AM reading this, Marty! I've actually been to this place before - walking through the streets mid-day with Keenbean when we encountered a throng of elementary school-aged children, which, needless to say, forced us into the safety of a bar, the name of which was...TA-DA! Biddy Early's! Now, that's some Barma! Love all the jerseys and the bartender was really nice and quick with a Miller Lite (or four) when we stopped in. Glad to see they're getting the Crawl recognition they deserve! And a great big thanks to Biddy herself for healing my hangover and making the kid-noise go away. TO BIDDY!
P.S. The bonus photos are hilarious! Hopefully one day in the future, Clacky can give me some dance lessons. He looks like he's really good at it. And Pabst-wrapped Smoopy! Classic.
@Biff: TO BIDDY AND TO GOOD BARMA!
Oh and my email is STILL not working. Earthlink sucks worse than a one-hundred-year-old Hoover.
biddy earlys looks like a real fun place! nice that the kitchen (that clacky got thrown out of, LOL!) is open till 2, but i'd need a lot of drinks to stomach that irish breakfast. LOL! great bonus photos!
Ok...time for me to fess up....I didn't remember going to this place until Gene emailed me the photos but I sure as shit remember cutting the rug over at Otto's shrunken head!
Gotta love Terry's Brett Favre costume!
I can't help checking out the kitchens in various places...I did the same at the Chop Tank on Cheeseburger saturday a few weeks back. That was pretty cool but Chef's are complex characters that usually don't have the strongest social skills...they consistently asked me to remove myself....having said all that, I merely popped my head through the door and said hello so thank the crew for the food. I didn't get in the way or do anything stupid.
@365: Nice elbows!
and A BIG shout out to Legendary Best Boy Bobby Neville for his exceptional work in Judgement Night starring Emilio Estevez and Denis Leary.
Sorry about the goddam double up on my comments....dunno what happened
@365: You probably have the power to fix it if not then maybe Best Boy Bobby Neville can help.
@Clacky: I got Bobby Neville and he fixed it right up! That best boy story still cracks me up and I can't believe they printed it! How funny that you can't remember part of the night, that's what happens when you match drinks with the BBC! That's why I went home early! It doubled up because SquareSpace has been wonky.
And speaking of wonky, Earthlink is still fucked up, I apologize if anyone's emailed me because they're not coming through, hopefully they'll fix it soon.
I'm starting a 4 night pub crawl tonight to match last week's 4 nighter. but ! I don't think I'll be going to 40 bars in 40 days this weekend. Lucky if I'll crack 7, or so ..... :(
Gonna try to make the 365 crawl one more time next month ... looking at the 11th/12th or the 18th/19th ??? choices choices choices .... ???
@GENE: Either one works for me! You in, Clacky?
OMG...where does one start...oh yea... it's about bras...no no...about bars...
al...and BBC and ABC...whoever gets credit for this place...thumbs up....(please take in account this poster regularly consumes that "rotgut" colt 45)...
al...guess it's yours cause i saw the "al is my co-pilot" thingie by boris...this one is for you...nice one
gene...kudos for the clacky ninga dance steps and terry's rockette step...not to mention smoppy's PBR warp...you all appear to to be great fun...
365...hey man i would have played the "dog" game but the fifth "rutgut" and the sixth or seventent jamesons was kickin' in...KOC
rr
oh yea...to biddy early.."We thought we had a demon amongst us in poor Biddy Early, but we had a saint, and we did not know it"
@365 and Gene: You know I'd be there but I'll it's a fair old haul to NY from my place.
